The reception will be held immediately following the Safety Design Integration Workshop. The reception welcomes all workshop participants and offers the first social opportunity to greet friends and colleagues. A local award winning winery will showcase its wines.

Tues., May 6, at 11:45 am
The luncheon will feature a speaker from the Bechtel National, Inc. / Washington Group International team that is designing and building the Waste Treatment Plant (WTP). The WTP will separate and vitrify the millions of gallons of radioactive and chemical wastes stored at the Hanford Site.

Tues., May 6, from 6 to 9 pm
Transportation will be provided. The Terra Blanca Winery and Estate Vineyard is a popular stop on Washington wine tours. The facility features a spacious Tuscan-inspired tasting room and stunning views of Red Mountain vineyards and rolling hills. For our workshop, we have arranged for an exquisite dinner at the winery, which produces award-winning estate wines. Great cuisine, paired with selected Terra Blanca wines, promises a delectable and memorable dining experience for our workshop participants. $35.00

Hanford Historical Tour

The Hanford Historical Tour presents many of the sites and activities that were part of the Manhattan Project, which developed the first nuclear weapon for the federal defense mission during World War II. Two favorite features of the tour are the old Hanford town site and the B Reactor. The B Reactor was the world's first full production-scale nuclear reactor and was a major contributor to science and world history. $20.00

Jet Boat Tour of the Hanford Reach

The guided tour provides a great opportunity to see and experience the beautiful Hanford Reach National Monument, the last free-flowing section of the Columbia River within the United States. Motoring up the river, the tour boat passes retired nuclear reactors, interesting geologic features, and wildlife habitat. Mule deer, coyotes, beaver, porcupines, Great Blue Herons, terns, pelicans, and even eagles can be seen on the islands and the shore.

Safety In Design Workshop

Mon., May 5, from 8am to 5 pm
The workshop will explore and discuss issues in implementing DOE-STD-1189, Integration of Safety into the Design Process, as drafted, particularly activities to:

  • Develop and maintain the Safety Design Strategy
  • Form & operate the Safety Design Integration Team
  • Apply objective criteria for safety significant use of new seismic design criteria, Appendix A mod
  • Identify a major modification by 10 CFR 830.

Discussion will cover affected directives and guidance that may require revision as a result of DOE-STD-1189 implementation. The workshop will feature speakers, panel discussions, and a forum for concerns. Feedback will be provided to DOE.

Ligo Tour

Wed., May 7, from 3:30 to 6:00 pm
The tour of LIGO (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory) on the Hanford Site is one of the most interesting scientific tours in the northwest. It explains how scientists are using the force of gravity to explore and explain uncharted aspects of the universe. The tour includes a visit to the control room and a walking tour of the Observatory. Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes. $20.00
