About Us
Welcome to the 2008 Safety Analysis Workshop
You are cordially invited to the 18th Annual Safety Analysis Workshop to be held May 3 to 8, 2008 in Richland, Washington. Fluor Hanford and the U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are hosting the workshop for the Safety Analysis Working Group (SAWG) of the Energy Facility Contractors Group (EFCOG).
Within the DOE community we share in the challenges related to licensing, resources, training, and education, which are stimulating topics for discussion and debate. We hope you will take full advantage of this professional opportunity and the activities and amenities offered in the Tri-Cities area. We pledge to do everything we can to help you get the most from this year's workshop.
We look forward to your participation.

Alan Ramble,
Workshop Chairman
Energy Facility Contractors Group
The EFCOG is a self-directed group of Management and Operating (M&O) contractors, Management and Integrating (M&I) contractors, and Environmental Restoration Management contractors (ERMC) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) facilities. The purpose of EFCOG is to promote excellence in all aspects of operation and management of DOE facilities in a safe, environmentally sound, efficient and cost-effective manner through the exchange of information.
Safety Analysis Working Group
The SAWG promotes safe, environmentally sound, efficient and cost-effective operation and management of DOE facilities through the exchange of information. The group accomplishes its objectives by promoting:
- excellence in the DOE M&O/M&I and ERMC Safety Analysis Programs
- exchange of successful safety analysis programs, practices, procedures, and lessons learned
- training on safety analysis through workshops, subgroups, and seminars.
Workshop Hosts
Co-hosts for the 2008 Safety Analysis Workshop are Fluor Hanford and DOE's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
Fluor Hanford is DOE's primary management contractor for Project Hanford and is responsible for dismantling former nuclear processing facilities, monitoring and cleaning up the site's contaminated groundwater, retrieving and processing transuranic waste for off-site shipment, maintaining the site's infrastructure, providing fire protection (Hanford Fire Department), providing security (Hanford Patrol), and operating the Volpentest HAMMER Training & Education Center.
Fluor has been a prime contractor to DOE since 1996 and has approximately 3,600 employees engaged in its activities at the Hanford Site. Fluor is one of the world's largest, publicly owned engineering, procurement, construction, and maintenance services companies with 35,000 employees working throughout the world.
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), in Richland, Washington, is one of DOE's ten national laboratories. It is operated by Battelle for DOE's Office of Science. PNNL performs research for DOE offices, other government agencies, universities, and industry, delivering breakthrough science and technology to meet national needs. The Laboratory offers its unique facilities, scientific equipment, and world-renowned scientists and engineers to strengthen the nation's scientific foundations for fundamental research and innovation. Research programs at PNNL are helping the United States
- prevent and counter acts of terrorism through applied research in information analysis, cyber security, and the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction
- increase energy capacity and reduce dependence on imported oil through research of hydrogen and biomass-based fuels
- reduce the effects of energy generation and use on the environment.
PNNL currently has approximately 4,000 staff members and a business volume of $760 million. The William R. Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a DOE Office of Science national scientific user facility, is located on PNNL's Richland campus. PNNL operates a marine research facility in Sequim, and has satellite offices in Seattle and Tacoma, Washington; Portland, Oregon; and Washington, D.C.. Battelle has operated PNNL for DOE and its predecessors since 1965.
